Sponsored Swim for Martin House

Fiona Garnett is organising and taking part in a sponsored swim in aid of the Martin House Children’s Hospice and Tadcaster Swimming Pool Trust.

The pool is opening for 24 hours from 7am on Thursday 14th November until 7am on Friday 15th November. Fiona will be swimming in the morning (approx 200 lengths??!!) and then working through the night from 10pm until 7am supporting swimmers who are taking part.

The event is to highlight amongst other things, how some parents who have a child with a range of disabilities can suffer from sleep deprivation over a prolonged period of time. Sleep deprivation can be one of the worst problems they endure.

The swimming pool is supporting Martin House alongside Radio York’s  Good Night Sleep Appeal and is splitting any proceeds on a 50%/50% basis between the pool which is a registered charity and Martin House Hospice.

 Message from Fiona

If anyone would care to sponsor me or indeed join me for the event I would be extremely grateful.

I have set up an online virgin giving page www.virginmoneygiving.com/giving/make-a-donation

Radio York are also on board with their Good Night’s Sleep Appeal and are sponsoring the hospice for a whole year.

York police are appealing for information after a college student sustained serious facial injuries during an assault.

Between 10.35am and 10.45am on Wednesday 9 October 2013, the 19-year-old man was walking back to York College with a group of friends after attending Askham Bar Tesco store.

As the group walked along the pathway which leads to the college, an altercation took place between the group and two men who were walking towards them.

Following an exchange of words, during which the victim stood up for a younger member of the group, the victim was assaulted and sustained a broken cheek bone, jaw and eye socket.

The two suspects are described as both aged around 18, both white, one around 6ft tall, of stocky build and wearing a grey shirt, the other is around 5ft 11in and of slim build with ginger hair.

There were a number of people in the area at the time, including students, who may have seen the incident.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the attack or can help identify the suspects to come forward.

Detective Constable Chris Hogg of York CID, said: “This was a violent assault resulting in serious injury to the victim and I can’t stress how important it is obtain information from anyone who saw the incident unfold or witnessed the actual assault.

“It’s possible that some students know who the attackers were and I urge them to come forward. If you are concerned about speaking to the police, you can talk to your tutors at the college if you prefer.”

Anyone who can help our investigation is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 2 and ask for Chris Hogg in York CID.

2.   On Tuesday 8th October a theft of a mountain bike occurred from John Smiths car park opposite the Esso petrol station in Tadcaster.  In broad daylight two males were seen to approach an unattended vehicle and remove the bike from the rear cycle carrier.  A black 4×4 was seen acting suspiciously prior to the incident.  A male has since been arrested by police however we are urging people to securely lock their bikes up around the town.  Bike theft is on the increase in the district and they are a very easy target when not left secure.
